Chromosome Disorder Awareness Jewelry

Bangles of Hope has just partnered with Neurofibromatosis Inc. of California. We will donate 25% of the purchase price of our Neurofibromatosis Awareness Jewelry to NFC.

WHAT IS NEUROFIBROMATOSIS?

Neurofibromatosis, also known as NF and formally known as von Recklinghausen’s Disease is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that results in the growth of noncancerous tumors along nerves.

There are two distinct forms of NF: NF1 and NF2. The NF1 gene is located on chromosome 17 and affects one in 4,000 individuals. The NF2 gene is located on chromosome 22 and affects one in 40,000. Of these it is estimated that fifty percent resulted from a spontaneous mutation, meaning there was no parental history of this disorder. Therefore, anyone’s child or grandchild can be born with NF.

NF is more common then Muscular Dystrophy and Cystic Fibrosis combined. NF is worldwide in distribution and affects both sexes equally. It has no particular racial, geographic, or ethnic inclination. An individual with NF has a 50% chance of passing on to his or her children. Despite its frequency, NF is still unknown to most people.
